Mortgage and Foreclosure Defense

Foreclosure is a legal procedure used by a lender to pay off a mortgage when a homeowner has defaulted on a loan.  Ninety percent of foreclosures are undefended by the homeowner and, perhaps because of this, many lenders make mistakes in how they bring these actions into courts.  If you have received a foreclosure notice, there might be ways to avoid losing your home.  I can advise you on possible options tailored to your individual circumstances and I can defend you in these actions against your lender.

County and City Code Enforcement

Fines for County or City code violations can quickly build up and deadlines to respond are very important.  Code enforcement issues can get complicated and resolving them can be expensive.  As an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Key West, I prosecuted all of the City's complex code enforcement cases.  In my private practice, I use this experience and in-depth knowledge of local codes to advocate for my clients.

Building and Construction Law

The area of building and construction law includes contract disputes, construction defect issues, and post-construction claims against the builder or the homeowner.  I assist clients in understanding their options when considering legal action, and I offer comprehensive services in this legal area.  I also have experience with land use planning and development regulations, and I can provide legal services in this area, as well.

Administrative and Government Law

Each government agency enforces different rules, regulations, and mandates in order to fulfill their duties.  As a former local government attorney, I have experience navigating city, county, state, and federal government.  Governmental laws and regulations can be difficult to interpret.  I assist clients in understanding administrative processes and represent their interests at government proceedings.

Contract Law

Many disputes between parties can be traced to contract formation.  Because the parties did not adequately set out what would happen if they fell into disagreement, they end up in court and engaged in expensive litigation.  I can perform a range of services related to contract law.  I can assist clients in preparing a contract, or I can advise clients on possible remedies for breaching a contract. 

Personal Injury and Negligence

Personal injury actions might involve slip and fall injuries, motor vehicle accidents, or premises liability.  I have experience assisting clients who have sustained injuries, both emotional and physical.  Personal injury cases can be difficult to prove and expensive to advance.  I work closely with my clients so they understand their options and are aware of potential costs. 

Discrimination and Employment Law

I assist clients in understanding their rights under certain employment laws and regulations.  I also advise clients on managing disputes with employers or employees, as well as on matters related to wages and hours.

Appellate Law

Many disputes are not resolved as parties would like by the trial court.  Generally, parties have 30 days to appeal to secure an appellate court ruling on the same matter.  Appellate law involves specific rules and practices by which higher courts review the judgments of a lower court.  I have experience interpreting these rules and implementing these practices and I can present your case to the Appellate Court.
